Screen Studio helped popularize the auto-zoom screen recording: you record, and the video glides toward whatever you click, with a smooth cursor and a nice background. Lensprout brings a similar idea to a Chrome extension. They are built for different setups, so the right choice depends mostly on your computer and what you record.

Where they really differ
The platform
Screen Studio is a native Mac app, and its site says there are no near-term plans for Windows. Lensprout runs wherever desktop Chrome runs. That is the biggest deciding factor for many people: if you are not on a Mac, Screen Studio isn’t an option.
What the zoom can see
A native app can follow your pointer across the whole desktop. A browser extension can only see pointer and keyboard activity inside web pages in Chrome. Lensprout can still record a whole screen or a window through Chrome’s picker, but automatic zoom only follows activity on web pages; elsewhere you place zooms by hand in the editor. If your demos live in Figma’s desktop app, Xcode or a terminal, Screen Studio’s approach fits better.
Polish versus ownership
Screen Studio has features Lensprout does not: cursor smoothing, webcam background removal, a podcast audio mode and hosted share links. Lensprout’s strengths are elsewhere:
- Price: everything is free, including commercial use.
- Openness: the code is MIT licensed, so you can audit it or change it.
- No cloud: nothing is ever uploaded, because there is no server.
- Editing extras: smart trim suggestions, a 3D stage with device frames, generated click and key sounds, and presets.
Vertical video
Both handle vertical output. Screen Studio offers 16:9, 1:1 and 9:16 plus a preview of social media overlays. Lensprout’s “fill and follow” mode turns a wide recording into a 9:16 video and pans to keep the cursor in frame. See our vertical video guide.
Availability
Screen Studio is available now for macOS. Lensprout is coming soon to the Chrome Web Store.
